Stereolithography or SLA® is the most well-known original process to obtain physical models from a 3D digital definition. Stereolithography enables the manufacturing of accurate prototypes and complex forms from photosensitive resins.
There are multiple applications:
Validating a design
Testing ergonomics
Marketing presentations
Master models for vacuum casting
Model for bellows
USP VI medical applications

Before printing, a 3D digital file is obtained via CAD software. This file, in STL format, is transmitted to the machine where a second software cuts a model in several layers of material with a fixed thickness.
Laser process
The model is formed of successive layers of photosensitive epoxy resin under the action of an ultraviolet laser. The laser beam sweeps the surface of liquid resin depending on the 3D digital model transmitted to the “printer”. Once one layer of the material has solidified, the platform drops to the value of the thickness of the following layer and a new section is solidified. In this way, there are as many cycles as necessary layers so as to obtain the full volume of the part.
